Excursions

Excursions and conference dinner on Thursday 21 September

On Thursday afternoon four different excursions are offered. They all start around 2 pm, so you have sufficient time to get some lunch in one of the many restaurants in the vicinity of the conference venue before going with the excursion of your choice.

The excursions are the following:

-1- Visit to Museum Speelklok

During a visit to the typical Dutch Museum Speelklok cheerful live music will surround you from centuries old self-playing musical instruments. The history of these instruments goes back to the 16th century in the Netherlands with the use of church carillons. Over the centuries, the general desire of people to be surrounded by music led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments: musical clocks, musical boxes, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras) and the traditional Dutch street organs.
Museum Speelklok, Steenweg 6, Utrecht.
Guided tour of one hour at 15:00 hours.

-2- Guided walking tour through the centre of Utrecht

An experienced English speaking guide shows the participants tour a lot of typical historical sights of Utrecht during two hours. Among these: picturesque canals with their cellars, old roman churches, the Dom Tower, an original city castle. There is an interval in a typical Utrecht pub.
Start of the guided tour at 14:00 hours.

-3- Visit to the Rietveld-Schröder House and/or the Central Museum

It should come as no surprise that the Rietveld Schröder House has a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with the canals of Amsterdam. This architectural masterpiece, based on the ideals of De Stijl, is unrivalled both within and outside the oeuvre of the Utrecht architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964).
The Central Museum is your gateway to art and culture from the world of Utrecht. From Rietveld to the Utrecht Caravaggists, and from Viktor & Rolf to the centuries old Utrecht ship. A museum that will leave you inspired.
Rietveld Schröder House, Prins Hendriklaan 50, Utrecht.
Audio tour (in Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish) of one hour at 15:00 hours.
Central Museum, Agnietenstraat 1, Utrecht.

-4- Guided architectural tour in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is famous for its modern buildings. In this excursion we will take the train to Rotterdam, visit the new central station, the famous new Market Hall, the cube houses and some other spots like the old harbour. During this tour there will be enough time for shopping and looking around.

Conference dinner
The conference dinner will start at 8 pm in restaurant Humphrey’s. This restaurant is located in a number of coupled wharf cellars along the Oude Gracht.
Restaurant Humphrey’s, Stadhuisbrug 3, Utrecht.
